Email technology has been with us for a long time, almost since the beginning of the Internet and it continues to play a major role in personal and professional online communications today.

Even though instant messengers (e.g. Skype, QQ), social networks (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn) and mobile apps (e.g. WhatsApp, SnapChat) have infiltrated into our daily lives offering a variety of real-time communication methods with our family, friends and contacts, email is still holding a strong position and it still occupies a big percentage of the total personal and commercial communications around the globe.

Unlike most platforms that I mentioned above which provide easy instant communication, email has its own strong advantages compared to them. For example, you can send the same email to a limitless number of recipients at the same time. For example, let's say you are a huge company with millions of customers that gave their consent for you to communicate them via email. You can craft an email and send it to all your customers with a single click of the send button. Another advantage is the ability to schedule, control and organize your email communications.

Free Web Based Email Account Providers

Depending on your specific needs, whether for personal or business purposes, you may choose to use a free or paid email account. Today, free email services are used by the majority of the Internet users and in the following section, we will take a close look at 5 of the most popular ones.

Yahoo! Mail

Best Free Web Based Email Account Providers - 1

Yahoo! is one of the oldest search engines that was once used more frequently than Google. It's email service, Yahoo! Mail, has been around for a very long time and it is still used by a large number of people. I have had my personal Yahoo! Mail account, which is also my main email account, for over 16 years now and I have never considered replacing it with any other email account providers -even though I used a lot of them- due to its very user friendly and simple to navigate interface.

The main thing I like about Yahoo! Mail is that it is not intrusive and it doesn't make dramatic interface or feature changes frequently. It makes reading, sending and organizing emails a very pleasant experience for me. It has that feeling that it lets the user do as they wish with their emails and contacts, whether it is to organize them, filter them and store them.

Yahoo! Mail Features

Yahoo! Mail provides 1 TB of email storage, which you will probably never run out of unless you are receiving thousands of large emails every day. It has an Archive and also you can create folders in order to organize your emails. The filtering of emails based on the sender or keywords in the subject or the body also helps with organizing the emails. Yahoo recently added a Smart Views feature which enhances the filtering and organization of your emails.

In my experience Yahoo! has a pretty good spam filtering system. In addition to that, you can block any email address that you don't want to receive emails from. While Yahoo! Mail is totally free, if you would like an ad-free experience you can sign upgrade your account for an annual price to remove the ads.

Microsoft Outlook

Best Free Web Based Email Account Providers - 2

Outlook, formerly known as Hotmail or Live, is the free email service of Microsoft. Hotmail email accounts were quite popular when MSN, Microsoft's messenger software, was a thing. After their acquisition of Skype, they eventually merged their desktop Outlook service with their online email service and it is now known simply as Outlook.

If you are using the desktop Outlook application or if you are using other Microsoft services, Outlook would be a good choice for you. I personally do not use it frequently because even though my Hotmail account is almost as old as my Yahoo! Mail account, I prefer Yahoo!'s interface and usability more than Outlook.

Microsoft Outlook Features

Outlook provides a simple folders system and categories system to help you organize your emails. In Outlook you can send emails as well as calendar events. It also has quick connections to online MS Office applications including Word, Excel and OneNote, which you may find handy if you are using those applications frequently.

Among the interesting features of Outlook are automatic replies and add-ins which enhance the functionality of the service.

Gmail (Google Mail)

Best Free Web Based Email Account Providers - 3

(Google and the Google logo are registered trademarks of Google Inc., used with permission.)

Gmail is Google's free email service that has been around for over a decade. Google, with their huge development resources, created a highly feature-full email account service and with the addition of various other Google software and applications, Gmail has become a nice email platform.

Though I like Google and many of their services, I just couldn't get used to Gmail. When it was first released, I used it a lot thinking it would replace my Yahoo! Mail account eventually. However, as Yahoo! kept up with features and continued to let me be in control, I stopped using Gmail. If you are new to using email services, you should definitely give it a try and see if you like it or not.

GMail Features

GMail offers 15 GB of email storage. Not as much as Yahoo but still you will most probably never reach that limit by regular use. GMail categorizes emails in different tabs based on their nature, such as personal communications, promotions or updates.

In GMail you can sort your emails by type, video chat with your friends via Google Hangouts within your inbox and use custom themes to display a different layout. GMail also allows you to send files up to 10 GB with the help of Google Drive. If you are considering GMail for your business or if you want to have a custom email address using your domain name, you can sign up for Google for Work package.

AOL Mail

Best Free Web Based Email Account Providers - 4

AOL Mail is one of the oldest email services on the Internet that has been around since early 90s. I used AOL Mail years ago very briefly to use the AIM, AOL's instant messenger mostly so I don't have much first-hand experience with their service, especially from the recent years but I will try to share the following information based on my research.

AOL Mail Features

AOL Mail offers an unlimited storage space for your emails with up to 25 MB file attachments. It has a custom folders feature to help you organize your emails. It allows you to manage your calendar, use AIM and send text messages from your email account. AOL also has a strong spam and virus protection as well as blocking of email addresses that you don't want to get emails from.

Mail.com

Best Free Web Based Email Account Providers - 5

Mail.com is another popular free web based email account provider that has been in operation for a long time. I never used Mail.com's email service but I used the hosting and domain registration services of Mail.com's parent company, 1&1. In addition to @mail.com email addresses, Mail.com allows you to choose from over 200 contextual email domains such as email.com, usa.com, europe.com, dr.com, workmail.com, and many domains related to professions, hobbies, tech and music.

Mail.com Mail Features

You can choose from 200+ domains to host your email. For example, if you are an accountant, you can have an email address like your-preferred-username@accountant.com, assuming your preferred name is available. This will especially be handy if you are looking for a professional looking email address.

Mail.com offers secure unlimited email storage, spam filter and antivirus to keep your inbox safe and clean. You can send up to 50 MB of attachments. A nice feature of Mail.com is that you can manage multiple email accounts from the same dashboard, giving you the ability to view personal and business emails at the same time.
